Chris, I am SO proud of you! I enjoyed reading every word of your race recap. I got goosebumps and even a little teary at parts. I don't know if you remember me telling you that in the one and only sprint tri I tried, I had to get pulled out of the lake in a boat...no swimming for me! So I could absolutely relate to your re-telling of the swimming portion! Thanks so much for sharing and being so honest about all of it. I love you cuz!

Nice job Chris. I would like to do something like that, except for the running and swimming part. I'm still to heavy to be putting that much stress on my knees (running that is). I too feel on edge after reading that. It makes me want to ride my bike, which I am doing after work tomorrow. We usually ride once a week after work, about 12 miles, and then one or two rides on the weekend.

Anyhow, congratulations Chris...I knew you would make it.

Wow, just reading about it got me a little on edge! Okay, so you finished last, but you FINISHED, and most importantly you showed up! Sometimes it takes more to show up then to do (it) whatever your (it) is. The other day in swim class I watched this little girl climb up the diving board only to climb down the ladder. And as I noticed the other kids in her class roll their eyes and such all I could think was WOW what courage it took just to climb up and look down at the water. Anyways that's how I feel about you. It's one thing to want to do something and never try then to try and not succeed. Not only did you try, you also succeeded. I'm one proud sista  And by the way you are still one very good looking brother. I love you muchas mas.

Congratulations Chris! It is wonderful to see such a comprehensive list of all the benefits you've gained over the last 9 months! I'm very glad you focused less on losing weight and more on fitness. Now that you have a better grip on what your body can handle and what it takes to motivate you you can focus on an 'off-season' diet. Oh, and BTW... there IS no off-season. :)
Most importantly, I am glad you enjoyed being fit again. I know how much hard work you put in, and it would have been easy for you to throw in the towel at certain points (knee injury, work overload, etc.) and you stuck with it. I sincerely believe that next year or even 2010 you'll look back at the "before" pictures and not even remember being out of shape.
Great job man! See you soon!

Give yourself credit for competing in, and completing, this very difficult event. You should be so proud of all the work you put it, and so what if you didn't reach your various goals of time and speed -- your did an amazing thing just by putting your body through it. I'm a short woman who thought she could play basketball. I was humbled in the 7th grade tryouts, but I look back at that now and I'm proud of how confident I was at the time.

Congratulations Chris on reaching this part of your goal! Now seems as good a time as any to remind you that this wasn't about losing weight or doing push-ups, this whole endeavor was about CHANGING YOUR LIFE. I know work made things more difficult when I left, but look where you are and where you've come from. Your health is considerably better and your knowledge of fitness and diet have improved tenfold. From where I sit it's a win-win situation, and you have the tools and motivation to take fitness as far as you want in your life. Best of all, you KNOW you can do whatever you want now.
I'd like to know more about the race you picked, please include that in the next post!

Thanks for the comment Dave! I re-read my post, and it seems that you and I are generally on the same page regarding the '08 San Diego Marathon, but you mistook my gripes about the course and my generalities about TNT a little the wrong way. I am proud of EVERY PERSON who runs a 5k all the way up to a marathon... every one.

This entire reply is below, but WAY too long. Here are my bullet points:
- I didn't like the side-sloped portions of the San Diego course.
- I was an idiot and got there late, because of that I was at the back of the pack.
- There is PLENTY to like in San Diego, and the Rock & Roll Marathon was run by a class organization who did a great job (as I stated in my original post). I didn't like several sections of the course.
- I do not like being behind walkers, and will try not to be back there again.
- I was a little too critical of TNT in my first post, but am wary of any group that becomes an overwhelming majority.
- TNT seems like a fine organization and admirably donates to charity, I prefer donating to The V Foundation as 100% of donations go directly to cancer research. I did not see the same statistics on TNT's site, but I may be wrong.

My post was in no way about making excuses or just to complain, I was just giving an honest view from my perspective. My failure to plan well is my own fault; I was at the back of the pack because I didn't get there early enough - totally my fault. Obviously 20,000 people managed to get there before me so it couldn't have been that difficult to get there on time... and I didn't. This was the first time I've ever run from the absolute back of the pack, and it was an unpleasant experience - that's the point I was making with my post. I've never been mixed in with the walkers during a race, and when there are so many of them walking 4-5 wide it is no fun for anyone (except them). They absolutely have a right to be there, they have the right to amass in any formation they choose - they paid their entry fee and have the same rights as anyone else. Anyone who wants to enjoy *running* the race will not enjoy being behind them... lesson learned. I also think that because there was no half marathon, a lot of people opted to go for the whole 26.2 and were conservatively pacing themselves at the back of the pack. Kudos to them for making the leap!
I do not have ANYTHING against TNT in particular, and I can see how my post missed that point (even though I stated "I'm all for TNT" empowering people...). Actually, as a race director myself I had TNT at my races in '07 and they were great folks across the board that I enjoyed dealing with. TNT has seen exponential growth in the last few years, from a handful of purple shirts at most tris to an overwhelming presence at San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon. My point is simple; when a single group becomes a majority then they will invariably use that leverage to benefit their own interests - that is human nature. I truly and sincerely hope that TNT remains true to its mission regardless of their size and clout.

I am a coach for TNT. I think, because of your poor planning on your part by getting there late and being at the back of the pack you need to blame someone or something for your poor planning. I teach my runners to respect other runners as I used to be very competitive and hated it when runners would walk or run three or four across. You seem to have an excuse for the whole day. The road is not flat, they wouldn't let bandits cross the finish line (duh), special treatment to purple jersey's, is there anything you liked about the race. If a coach got in your way and impeded your finish I agree they should be talked to. You never said they got in your way, just that they were on the course. I am also a race director and if some group told me they were bringing over 5,000 runners to my race, don't you think I would do something special for that group! (You would also). I have done marathons across the US and Europe and hear the same complain, "There were slow runners in front of me". When you figure out how to control that let the world know, because people lie about qualifying times and jump in corrals they don't belong in etc, so it will continue to happen. You talk about a congested road. Boston marathon starts on a two lane road in a small town in Mass and doesn't get much better for miles, but we know that up front. Unless you are planning on winning money or prizes go to races to enjoy the people and the fun you can have running 26.2 miles. Go with a positive attitude to enjoy, because it sounds like you went with a positive attitude to complain.

Nice Drive - should be a cakewalk for you after your cross-country oddessey with two cats, two dogs and two vehicles (and, as it turned out, two passengers!).

Good Luck. Remember to hydrate this time!

At month 8, I'm holding steady at 266 lbs. Wanted to get to 250 by the race, but doesn't look like that's going to happen. Ah, well. I'll do what I can, and go from there.

 I meant triathlon. A marathon would be nice, but running 50 miles a week in training would kill my knee. Marathon, Biathlon, Triathlon, Decathlon. Who can keep them all straight, anyway.

Hey Chris, here's an idea for your running: Vary the workout up with intervals. Just because you're run is 3.5 miles it doesn't mean you need to keep that pace up the whole time. Pick a few spots (3 telephone poles, etc.) to pick up the pace. You'll burn more calories and you'll be able to "shake things up" a bit during the run. I've made more speed gains by picking up the tempo 2-3 times vs. trying to sprint at the end.
Don't get discouraged by a couple of pounds or number of push-ups; keep your eye on the goal and the big picture!

Jen,

Actually, I'm NOT blaming my wife. I'm blaming it on my kid. Its ALL HER FAULT. No, actually, it just made for a very interesting start to my first race. And the only reason you can't do the run is because you decided to stay in Washington. If you were out here, you'd be running with me.

Great job Chris!
I'm really bummed that I couldn't be there to root you on, but I am so very proud of you! Keep it up and I promise I will be there for a race soon!

On another note, I've begun to motivate co-workers out here in AZ to trail for a marathon... I'll keep you posted on that! I'm just getting back into shape for the San Diego Marathon on June 1!

Okay, so I'm wondering if maybe you're hinting just a little that had your wife been watching your girl and you hadn't taken her out of the tree you could have maybe finished earlier? Mom says it took you 20 minutes? I've said it before and I will say it again I couldn't do it. I'm very impressed. Love you lots give your little girl kisses for me. How'd she do in her race? I'm hoping to get Aliya in swim lessons this summer!!!!!

Chris, don't let everything get you down - we all have those days! Strangely enough, I had a really cranky morning today too! My Ex wife is giving me a few problems and just getting under my skin and I'm a fool for letting her get to me. I love my kid, and that's all that matters; everything else will take care of itself -- right?
You've been doing an awesome job and are an inspiration to everyone who has seen you in action or read about you online. I'm SO impressed that you have been continuing to push yourself without me there to bother you - that shows how far you've come and how dedicated you are! I'm headed home in 4 days, can't wait to resume our workouts!

Hi Chris,

Whoa! We ALL have these days! When it is me, I go here:

http://www.simpletruths.com/dash/index.html

Taking care of ourself and our spirit is JUST as important as exercise, sleep and eating well. So today, find a place, (bathroom, who cares!), and take a few deep breaths. Try and center yourself and carry that throughout the rest of the day.

Call me if you like!

You are great, cool, fun, terrific, and awesome! Being here is a gift! :)

Be well,
Jamie

Cool! Can't wait to see the pictures.

I didn't realize you'd posted, or I wouldn't have trounced you with my non-event post I just put up.

As for sit-ups/push-up/dips. See, in my mind, I wouldn't even bother doing that stuff, yet. Its not that much a part of me. I just don't think about it. I'm surprised you're finding time to workout after 10 hour days hoofing it in the snow, anyway.

Will we see you on TV?

UPDATE: I just walked the entire Skier/Boarder X Course from the top (got a ride from one of the snowmobile taxis we have lined up at the bottom). The course is 1 mile long and pretty gnarly. It's still a little rough and getting massaged by the crew of snowcats. After that I walked up the superpipe and got to see it up close - absolutely awesome! I forgot my iPhone, so I'll have to make another trip for pictures.

I had a deep tissue massage on Sunday and that night I was really nauseous, went to bed early. Woke up Monday and had a headache, upset stomach and was so dehydrated. I drank two gallons the night before and was still thirsty after the massage. I ran a fever the last couple of days all lowgrade, I really think it was the massage. It had been a while and I feel so much better today. No one else was sick or anything. My mom thinks it was the massage too. obviously I need to get them more often that I am to get rid of all this stuff. Thanks for your info. I was begining to wonder if there were others out there too.

I initially said "Antibiotics" up there. I meant an antibacterial/antibiotic ointment. Not the pills or meds. Oops.

And it may be hard to tell from the photo, but that's raw flesh there. There's no skin at all in those patches. The weirdest part was that I didn't really notice them until the next morning as I sat on the couch and wondered what was causing this dull burn every time I touched the backs of my ankles to the couch fabric. Ouch :!:

Thanks Mike,

You're right on both counts. Everyone at work has been nothing but supportive. "Do what you gotta do. Work will still be here."

And, after yesterday's workout, even though my legs are sore, I still felt better than I had in days. Both mentally and physically.

Hope to see you tomorrow! Hope Jamie didn't miss me.

Jamie,

Thanks for the clarifications. Its a lot of information to take in, and I find that my notes aren't always the best.

As for the calories of the fruits, I pulled from a website, and I based them on the size of fruit I usually eat

See you soon!

Jamie here! Great job summarizing Chris, you got most of the details right on! I will comment on a few things however, just for clarification purposes:
Quote: "You want a combination of proteins and carbs (maybe Jamie or Mike can explain why)."
The reason we want both protein and carbohydrate after exercise is that your muscles need both protein (to repair damaged muscle fibers) and carbohydrate (which is stored as "glycogen" in the muscles, and used as fuel during your next workout). However, in order for the protein to taken in effectively, a hormone called insulin is needed. What triggers this release? Carbs. So, both are needed for different reasons.

Quote: "However, stay away from fats, since fats will inhibit your body’s ability to process the foods and you will lose the benefits of the other foods."
Fats won't harm you after a workout, they just slow digestion, slowing the rate at which the carbohydrate and protein can be absorbed by your muscles. You are better off waiting a little while to eat fats so you can deliver nutrients to your muscles quickly after a workout.

Quote: "Also, remember that foods eaten up to about an hour before you work out will also be absorbed this way, since they’re first on tap."
You got this one a little off here - foods eaten right before a workout will help to balance blood sugar levels during a workout, and will only be used as fuel if you've depleted your stored energy (i.e. lunch).

Quote: "A good example is that in terms of calories, 1 large banana (86 calories) = 2 apples (88 calories) = 4 cups of strawberries (90 calories). "
       Almost: Banana = 105 calories, Apple = 80 calories, 4 cups strawberries = 90 calories.

Quote: For instance, items like pretzels may be somewhat low in calorie density, but their nutritional value is also very low.
Nope: Pretzels and most other "dry" carbs like crackers, etc. are actually high in energy density because they weigh hardly anything and have lots of calories for this weight! Example: an apple weighs about 6oz. and has 80 calories. Just 1 oz. of pretzels has 110 calories.

Quote: "Something about the Whey Protein is most easily used by the body, and so is the best choice for this purpose."
Whey protein is very easy for the body to absorb and assimilate into muscle fibers, tissue, and other important uses for protein. Other proteins are not as easily taken up by the body; this is otherwise known as its "bioavailability." Eggs are also one of the most bioavailable proteins.

Hope this helps! Night all!

Thanks!

Yeah, sometimes I feel like I'm doing great. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing OK. Sometimes I look and feel like I've failed miserably that day, or even that meal, and then just tell myself, 'I'll do better next time.'

Just a thought. As things wind up on a lot of the 'physical' subjects, would you like me to get a bit more detailed in posting about foods? Just a thought. We might be able to find a way to tackle it on the blog, with me sharing certain things I've eaten, or meals prepped at home.

One thing I noticed is that, I'd started to try the eating small 5 or 6 meals a day when I was working out lightly on my own, and it was hard to stick to. Sometimes I just didn't feel hungry, and it threw the whole schedule out of whack, or I felt like I was over eating.

Now that I'm working out almost daily, tho, I find that I'm more than ready to eat every 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours. At least I'm no longer constantly hungry.

Thanks!

Well, I've actually only gotten to that last tier of clothing, though. There are several more to go, and I'm kind looking forward to dusting off several items along the way, including a pair of zebra striped... well, never mind. But I won't be getting back into those until July, I'm sure.

Ask some of those folks in the hall to stop by the blog and just say "hi"!

Congratulations! It sounds like you're doing great, and moving at a pace that is health and sustainable. Well done.

I lost 45 lbs in 2002 on weight watchers - there was nothing more satisfying than realizing that by applying a simple set of rules I could take control of my body. Hopefully this month has made that fact reality for you, and you're on a path to a long and healthy life :)

Chris - Don't worry about the scale this week. We have to look at your net loss over the month, and one week doesn't reflect this. And Mike is right, you are probably gaining muscle and losing fat. Getting a body fat test is a great idea.

Now, if next week we have a gain as well, we have to look at your intake a little closer. But for now keep doing what you're doing! See you soon. Jamie

Hey Chris,
That's awesome that you have a plan and a goal. I've been hitting the gym a few days a week since March, but I havn't been serious enough either and I think your progress is really going to motivate me too.
I meet with my trainer tomorrow (we meet every 2 weeks).
So good luck and wish me good luck.
I'm at 310 lbs, so I know how you feel.

Take care Chris,

Yes, its sad but true: people who don't get enough sleep (that's 7-8 hours per night, more if you are training hard) are significantly hungrier the next day. What's more, the foods that we tend to crave during these times are our waistlines' worst enemies: high sugar, processed carbohydrates. So think the next time you have a coffee at dinner, or stay up late puttering around the house, or even work. If its not due tomorrow, it can wait! Your weight will thank you.

Yes, Tostitos. Plain corn chips in general (not that I don't like Doritos or Fritos, mind you) were a regular staple of my day to day living. Plain. With salsa. Sliced cheese. Chili. Refried beans. Full blown, head on, beef or chicken nachos. Or, best of all, with Desert Pepper Black Bean dip. http://www.desertpepper.com/

If it was healthy, I could subsist almost entirely on Tostitos.

Ha! Charlie is my littlest brother out there in Washington state. But, the Wilson's don't really breed us small, so by little, I mean younger. Justin, the middle brother, is bigger than both of us. :D

Keep up the great work, yourself! 25lbs, eh? That's great! Once we're both down to size, I'll have to fly in and get a family picture taken.

And its nice to know that the hunger might go away soon, as well.
