Day 45: The not-quite-so 10 minute mile
Haircut today. Happens about every 4 weeks, and generally on a Wednesday.
So, I shot an email to Mike yesterday asking how we wanted to handle today’s shortened workout period. It was supposed to be a strength day, but Mike said to skip it and instead he had me do 20 minutes on the bike, and then 10 on the treadmill. His last bit of instruction was to try to get a whole mile into the 10 minutes.
He said, “Its the only thing you’re doing, so put your all into it.” I figured I could do that since I had done 10 minutes at 6mph on Monday’s run, so how hard could it be, anyway? Piece o’ cake, right?
After 20 minutes on the bike, my legs were all wobbly. They just didn’t like going from the pedaling motion to the running motion. It took about 30 seconds at 4mph to get into step, and then I cranked it up. Several times, I felt strange stress on different muscles. Probably the ones that were used on both the bike AND the run. At 5 minutes in, I realized I wasn’t going to catch up, so I pushed it to 6.1mph, then at 7.5 minutes, I pushed it up to 6.2mph. In the end, I only got .995 miles into that 10 minutes. Would I feel justified calling it a 10 minute mile? NO WAY! I was dying. Completely. As soon as that timer said 10 minutes I slammed the ‘Stop’ button and walked around the inside of the gym twice before I could even pretend to catch my breath.
Anyway, tomorrow I’m meeting with Jamie (the nutritionist, remember?) at 11, and then I’m doing strength training. Now that the schedule is all twisted up, I’m not sure what Mike’s got planned for Friday, but it probably won’t be strength training.
