Day 39: I can’t believe I’m still up.

Finally got to a point where it really looked like I’d be to bed on time tonight, but no such luck. My father and step mother recently closed their Thai food restaurant in Spokane, Washington, and sold the location, equipment and all to a local competitor who was looking to expand. The competitor also kept the phone number (why not? you need a number and anyone calling that number is looking for Thai Food anyway.) The problem was, people were still going to the website, calling the number, and ordering from the wrong menu. Problems ensued. So, I got a pleading phone call from dad, and I had to fix up the website to stop the chaos. Its actually kind of a depressing. Feels like the end of an era. http://RiverviewThai.com

Well, enough about my troubles.  How did today go? Better. It was day 2 of Adobe Days at ESPN, so I was in ‘training’ most of the day while Adobe reps ran us thru a number of their products. The good news is that I was able to get out of there for long enough to hit the gym.  The bad news is that I only had about 45 minutes to work out. I talked to Mike about it, and he came up with an alternative plan.

30 minutes: Any cardio, but try to stay on one thing the whole 30 minutes. I chose the treadmill.

Then, 3 repetitions of this set, as fast as I can:
Push-up to T: go to failure
Physioball Sit-ups: 20
Lower Back Extensions: 12

Mike’s reasoning for those 3 excercises was that since it sounded like I was doing a lot of sitting all day, that he wanted me to work my ‘core’. I’m not sure why or what that means, so next time I’ve got him on camera, I’ll ask him.

Well, I kind of blew it on the cardio.  I decided to do the treadmill, and was only able to do 20 minutes before my calves and shins started to really hurt.  I got in over a mile and a half, though, which is about where I was before starting this, and is the farthest I’ve run since starting 9 Months to Tri.

So, then I was going to finish the last 10 minutes on the Arc Trainer, but somehow just completely spaced it and went straight to the strength routine.  Strength routine went with no problems. Then i jumped on the Arc Trainer.  But the time was getting very tight, so I decided to just do 6 minutes (which is what I would have done if it’d been a normal workout).

Here’s where it gets really strange.  Once I finished the 6 minutes, the second both feet hit the ground, the quadriceps of both my legs cramped and dropped me into a crouching position behind the machine. I slowly pulled myself into a standing position using the machine for balance.  Why did this happen? I’m not sure, so I’m going to ask Mike and/or Jamie about it when I get the chance.

I don’t know if it was the fact that I ran farther than I’d run in the last month and a half, or if it might have been the fact that I’m running low on sleep, or even if today’s diet killed me. What about today’s diet? Well, I’ve got a confession…

I woke up on time, but somehow ended up running behind schedule anyway. So, I didn’t have time to swing by the cafe and get myself an omelette, which I really wanted. While I’d had a banana at 7, by 9 I’m generally getting pretty hungry again. Bananas just don’t have any real staying power. I stared at the Atkins bars in my cupboard just before leaving, but I’ve been eating too many of them lately. I just couldn’t force another one today.  Don’t get me wrong. I like them just fine. But too much of anything can make you gag. So instead, I went straight to training, and grabbed a raisin bagel off the table in back and cut it in half. I put Peanut Butter on one side, and veggie cream cheese on the other.

That was pretty much all I ate before getting to the gym.  Usually by this time I’ve finished off real food and maybe even a yogurt and/or fruit salad.

I ate much better the rest of the day, but its interesting to note how I got the munchies this evening. Maybe its because I started the day poorly.  Or maybe its because I’m tired and stressing. Don’t know.

Well, I’m off to bed. Don’t want to stay up any later than I have to.
