Day 14: Playing with the Kid and Lack of Sleep

Time at the Pool with Esmaya

Today I spent some time at the pool with my daughter and faced one of the problems I’ve been living with for the last 7 years.  Its almost impossible to REALLY exercise while I’m spending time with my daughter.  She simply can’t swim well enough for me to not keep a constant eye on her, nor can she move fast enough to keep up with me if I start going at full speed.  Really, I’m not there to exercise anyway; I’m there to spend time with her and play.

All in all, its not a bad thing, but there has to be time to compensate for it, which is something I’ve had difficulty doing since my work schedule has been so heavy since she’s been born.

Which brings me to my next topic.

TIP: Lack of Sleep

Sleep more to eat less. So, as I said this morning, I didn’t get to sleep until 2am. I work a lot of nights lately. I don’t like it, and I’m trying to clear most of it off of my plate, but its a current reality of my life.

Anyway, today a friend of mine who was wondering if I was suffering from Sleep Apnea (I don’t think so) emailed me and suggested I look up the terms Gherlin and Leptin. While doing a quick search, I gleaned this interesting information from Wikipedia:

Professor Cappuccio of the University of Warwick has recently discovered that short sleep duration may also lead to obesity, through an increase of appetite via hormonal changes. Lack of sleep produces ghrelin, which stimulates appetite and creates less leptin which, amongst its many other effects, suppresses appetite.

So, apparently, the fact that I overwork myself often subjecting myself to 5-7 hours of sleep for days on end may have had a lot to do with my weight gain over the last 5 years. Interesting.

Yes, its sad but true: people who don’t get enough sleep (that’s 7-8 hours per night, more if you are training hard) are significantly hungrier the next day. What’s more, the foods that we tend to crave during these times are our waistlines’ worst enemies: high sugar, processed carbohydrates. So think the next time you have a coffee at dinner, or stay up late puttering around the house, or even work. If its not due tomorrow, it can wait! Your weight will thank you. :wink:
