Day 7: Road Trip and Wedding
I honestly don’t know what to think about today. On the one hand, I think I did pretty well on the food choices, but on the other hand, there are enough choices that I’m unsure of that it wouldn’t surprise me if I’m told I was wrong. :/
Started the day well with a banana and a handful of walnuts, but then once we were on the road, we were running too late to stop at a real restaurant, where I could maybe order food that would work for me. So instead of hitting a fast food restaurant, we stopped at Trader Joe’s and I bought a Balance energy bar and a Stonyfield Farm smoothie. Both seemed good on my initial look, but on the road, I took some time to go over the nutrition labels a bit better, and I think the smoothie was a glorified & over-sweetened yogurt milkshake. The combined calories for the two were also 430 calories, and I don’t yet have a baseline for calorie intake, but this seemed awfully high for the mini-meals that I’ve been eating.
Later, at the wedding reception, I was pretty limited in my choices. I skipped a number of items that I KNEW were higher in calories and carbohydrates, but even the salad tasted like it had more oil than I’d normally use. Other items included baked, breaded chicken breast (the other option was an unbreaded beef roast), shrimp linguine (yeah, OK. That one I KNOW the noodles were no good for me, and the sauce was probably just as bad) and butter squash risotto, which probably didn’t have any good rices in it, but I’m not sure how bad that it, either. Also, had a 1/2 glass of champagne, but we passed on the cake. It was getting late, and we had a 7 year old to get home to bed.
Finally, on the way home, we stopped at the Outback Steakhouse. There I had the Shrimp Grillers, a tossed salad, a couple slices of their incredibly delicious bread, and an unsweetened iced tea. Several points of uncertainty here, as well. Not sure if Shrimp is as good for me as other seafood. Its not actually the same thing as fish, you know? Also, the shrimp and grilled veggies come on a bed of wild rice. Is that better than white rice? Worse than brown rice? Don’t really know. And are vinaigrettes oil based or worse?
Hoping to find all of this out later this week when I sit down with Jamie.
In all, today taught me that I have A LOT to learn about nutrition. I’m a whole lot more ignorant than I thought I was.
