Day 170: Orthopaedia, Sports Medicine and an MRI.
Lots to tell, but not much to say, really. Its Tuesday night, March 18th. Monday should have been my 6 Month weigh-in, but it hasn’t happened yet.
I got to the pool on Friday, but haven’t been to the gym or a pool since. I didn’t realize it, really, until I just typed it, but there it is. I’ve been very busy, and my schedule isn’t very flexible this week. Half my team if off in training, leaving the rest of us to pick up their slack. That’s OK. Next week they’ll be picking up my slack. Anyway, lots happening.
Yesterday I went to see a new doctor. He specializes in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. I had him take a look at my knee, and he put me thru a much larger range of motions and tests than anyone who’s looked at my knee so far. He also found the click that no one else seemed to be able to find and could click my knee at will. By the end of our appointment, he had me on 2 Aleve, twice a day for the next week. He also had me get an MRI today so he could get some better images of my knee than the X-rays he took yesterday could give him.
Finally, his preliminary analysis is that the clicking in my knee does NOT seem to be over-use related. So, no tendonitis. Rather, he said the clicking was too consistent and sounded too “mechanical” to be tendinitis. His preliminary thoughts were that it might be either torn cartilage or else toughed cartilage material. The second one is akin to a tough callous that is sitting between my leg muscles.
It sounds like either way, neither of them will bench me completely, but the treatments range from ignoring it entirely to knee surgery to remove the excess cartilage. I’m meeting with him again on Friday, and should know more about what the MRI means, as well as a new plan of attack for my workouts.
