Day 166: Life is Changing Dramatically

So, since my manager, Brett, left to pursue his new career, I’ve had to step up quite a bit at work. Not that I mind, really, but all of the meetings that he used to go to I’m now attending. Generally, this wouldn’t be a real problem, but we’re sprinting at work to get the intranet requirements nailed down for phase 1, and meetings are popping up left and right. Sometimes with less than an hour’s notice, even.

FOR INSTANCE… yesterday I was going to go swimming, but I can only swim laps between 12 and 1, and a meeting was scheduled for 12:30. No problem, I thought. I’ll go to the gym after the meeting. But, wait! I only had swim trunks. No shorts, shoes or t shirt. Nuts. And I worked late. Got home about 7.

So, today I figure I’ll bring 2 bags. One with my swim gear and one with my gym gear, just in case. My meeting schedule was lined up so that I had 12 to 2 open. Swimming looked good, but if my 11 o’clock ran a bit late, I could still fly across the street and get to the gym. The rest of the day was booked. At 11:30, a meeting was scheduled for 1. Technically that gives me 12-1, but between driving, changing and showering, I’d only have 15 minutes to swim or 20 minutes to work out, and no time to stop and get lunch afterwards. And I worked late again. Got home about 7.

That’s 3 days in a row now that I’ve missed my lunch workout and gotten out of work late enough to not be able to make it up in the evening. If things don’t turn around soon, I’ll be in trouble here. Right back to the days where I was working 16 hours a day and not working out at all.

My next tactic if this keeps up may be to switch my schedule to hit the gym first thing in the morning. Get up an hour or two earlier and not worry about meetings getting to me.  The only problem with that is swimming. There is swimming in the morning, but its not lap swim so there’s a kind of free-for-all feeling to it. I did that years ago at this pool and didn’t enjoy it at all.
